The dogs would be at the shelter for 3-4 months, on our track list which rescues have access too at all times, before behavior team sends out a official and final rescue plea a week prior to euthanasia. If a rescue shows interest 4 days are added, the most I've seen added was another 3 months. Staff are ok with some dogs yet there are some dogs they become very concerned for safety.
Currently there are 2 examples I have:
    1. A dog with a sever (40 stitches) face bite yet is very friendly with staff
    2. A dog that was stray roam with a minor bite (5 stitches) but has horrible barrier reactivity. Not allowing staff to even to leash him to go out for a walk.

Question from Space Crisis attendee: How should redirect bites/bite attempts be weighed in a behavior euthanasia decisions? I don't consider this a fear bite.

Question from attendee of Big Dog Space Crises: Do you have issues with fosters taking a dog that they cannot behaviorally handle if they know the dog is at risk for euthanasia? Do you notice more burnout with fosters who take these dogs, since some may still not make it?

Question from attendee of Big Dog Space Crises: Is there any recent research on adopter satisfaction when adopting pets with behavioral needs? (ex. only pet, reactivity, stranger danger, fearful, etc). I know that Dr McMillan did a large survey with adopters of puppy mill and hoarding case dogs. I would love to see something similar done with the more common 'behavior pet' population in shelters.

Question from attendee of Big Dog Space Crises: What about situations where someone wants to adopt a dog with aggression history, so that they can prevent euth but they have announced the intention of rehoming?

Question from attendee of Lifesaving Protcols: I'm curious about the adopter satisfaction idea, but not related to return rates. More research or examples of adoption follow-up surveys would be helpful to see. Also, were there any additional factors that could be found that would correlate to the satisfaction results? Ex: people who were very happy with their pet also feeling that they received appropriate counseling, or how many reached our for support post-adoption that helped them to be successful (either reaching out to the shelter or training classes or vet surpport).

I know this question is addressed to the hosts, but I want to mention that, like all behavior, behavior at a sanctuary type of shelter / long stay shelter is largely controlled by environment, which includes not only the physical environment, but all other stimuli present.  So it isn't a matter of the type of shelter so much as it is a matter of the type of care an animal receives.  A long term resident who is provided anti-aversive training, handling, and care -- who is treated like family -- will tend to be more behaviorally sound than a short term resident who isn't.

Question from attendee of Livesaving Protcols: Are there any ideas for trying to get case dogs to foster? Since they're not legally ours, we can't promote them the same so it's even harder to find fosters for them.
