Updated 5/15/23 at 2:07pm - Recording is now available to watch on-demand

We hope to see you on Monday, May 15, 2023 at 11am PT for our next Community Conversations call.

We will be joined by Dr. Kwane Stewart, Veterinarian and Co-Founder of Project Street Vet. Project Street Vet is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit public charity that provides free veterinary care, treatment, and support to the pets of individuals experiencing homelessness and/or housing vulnerability. During his presentation, Dr. Kwane Stewart will tell us about his personal journey -- "Many years ago on the verge of leaving the veterinary profession, I stumbled upon an unhoused man and his suffering dog. In a spontaneous act of kindness, I discovered why it wasn't my time to give up. It led to a 12-year, life-changing odyssey -  serving the pets of the unhoused - that continues today."

Here's a teaser of some of the incredible work Dr. Kwane "The Street Vet" and his team does for the unhoused community

I have to say this is the best zoom meeting to date.     I ordered his book  can't wait to read it.   My problem with reading is it makes me go to sleep .   So, I usually have
to read the same pages over a few times.   lol

I think I cried 3 times. You nailed it and ending with the kindness message was brilliant. Kwane, I'm so proud of what you are doing. I knew you were special from way back when you started your career at Stan Co. You have to visit Albuquerque to fire us up. (I moved back last year.) Augusta

For me, this was the MOST impactful and inspiring conversation/presentation I have attended. I don't have much TV online access or time to watch things so I never heard of him until today. I barely have time to attend any more sessions and webinars but I was absolutely captivated, inspired and brought to tears. I was thinking of what colleagues and vet friends I was going to share this with and get the book for them too as it will be truly inspiring. God bless Dr. Stewart. I pray this leads to many more street vet type programs across the globe.

Dr. Kwane Stewart will be the keynote speaker at the 2023 CVMA PacVet Conference in Long Beach. Can't wait to meet him.
I do this work for San Mateo County, I have tried to utilize the One Health concept with my work for the county Health Department and we coordinate with the Street Medicine program to provide care for the pets as well as their owners!

    Hi Dr. Lewis,
Street Dog Coalition is another non-profit that provides free care for pets of the unhoused. The organization is rooted in Colorado but they have free clinics all over the country or wherever they can partner with the vets. Does San Mateo County have a Street Medicine program as well? It is wonderful that programs like StreetVet, SDC, and yours exist. Thank you for supporting One Health.

There is a Street Dog group from Santa Clara County that visits with a local church group that provides hot meals for the unhoused. They go there once a month, at least they used to. It's a site that I used to go to with my service but since Street Dog is covering that site, I've moved on to other sites. I also go to anywhere that the homeless resource coordinating organizations and the San Mateo Police Department Homeless Outreach officers contact us to go to. Some of the pets and owners that I used to see at the church group site are now in temp housing with the homless resource organizations so I still see those clients. They've kind of become long term clients since I first strated my program in 2018. Thanks to organizations like CAWFC, and California for All Animals and hopefully Maddie's, I've gotten grants to purchase supplies since the county only pays my partime salary. I'm chipping away at my manager and her manager to try to make my program an official service of the health department.

So many people think that Silicon Valley is wealthy due to the number of large tech companies in our area but the high cost of living is causing homelessness to sky rocket. We may not have the largest population of unhoused but we have an awful lot of people who just can't afford to pay rent here, never mind to eat for themselves or their pet.

    Kathleen,
I volunteered with SDC when they had their free clinic in Sacramento this past April. I am a trainer and want to offer free behavior services. I have to say most of the dogs are very good. The only complaints are jumping and pulling. I brought harnesses and leashes and was happy to see so many ditched the collars. I hope with the no-pull harnesses, the guardians will be able to control their dogs better. The next clinic is in July and I am definitely volunteering again.

Thanks to the 250+ people who joined us live for today's call! We were all so fortunate to have Dr. Kwane Stewart share his journey and the stories of the people and pets he has helped. The recording of the call is now available to watch on-demand or to share with your friends and colleagues. Below you'll find a recap of the agenda, highlights from the chat and attached is a copy of Dr. Kwane's presentation slides. If you have any follow up questions or comments you'd like to share with Dr. Kwane, feel free to leave them as a reply to this thread and we'll make sure he sees them!

    Agenda

    • Welcome from Hosts:
      • Ariel Zhang, Vice President of National Programs at Humane Rescue Alliance
      • Clare Callison, Director of National Operations at Austin/American Pets Alive!
    • Question of the Day: What inspired you to work in animal welfare, and how has your journey in this field impacted you personally and professionally?
      • "I grew up working with my father in animal control/rescue work and also pursued veterinary medicine as an RVT/VTS-have supported rescue/humane education/wildlife throughout my life." - Julie Nettifee
      • "I was asked to create a large sign for one of our local shelters. Once that was completed, I went into the shelter and saw the need for volunteers. I have been hooked ever since." - Debbie Hawkins
      • "I was actually a COVID hire and I thought I would go back to law school. I knew I wanted to help people and fell in love with it while I was here. I started in pet retention/intake and couldn't look back. I stayed because I'm from a very small, poor town and I wanted to do more to help my home community." - Erica Devinney
      • "I started in Animal Welfare because I've always loved animals. I came for the animals but stayed for the people." - Cinder Wilkinson-Kenner
      • "5 FeLV+ kittens - Bo, Barney, Belinda, Bernice and Barnard.  They ultimately became legands!!" - Margaret Tompkins
      • "I've always loved dogs. Initially, I started with volunteering with the kids for their service hours, but they moved on, I never did." - Amy Charles
      • "I've always loved cats. We had cats dumped at our house growing up and mom mon was a pioneer TNVRing these cats on her own dime and caring for them" - Amanda Gray
      • "Apparently I was born an animal lover. Just started doing rescue on my own as a child. Refused to eat meat at a young age. Cried when the kindergarten teacher played Puff the Magic Dragon on her record player over and over. Ugh." - Donna Miller
      • "I see the connection between healthy communities and healthy pet families...that's been my inspiration." - Jenny Webber
      • "I love volunteering for the AuSable Valley Animal Shelter in Grayling Michigan. The staff and board are caring and compassionate. Love the animals housed in their shelter." - Alayne Hansen
      • "I started working in animal welfare after touring a shelter with my son, who wanted to do his Eagle Scout project there.  While I was there I thought this is what I want to do!" - Linda Rubin
      • "My daughter and I have always been animal lovers. I started my nonprofit to honour her after she passed away in 2017.  We help shelters and rescues with various programs, our main focus being to keep pets and their people together." - Johanna Spielman
      • "Jack Hanna. I called myself Candice Hanna when I was little 🤣" - Candice Hinkle
      • "after moving to South Florida I couldn't help but join a rescue as we have a lot of stray population here :(( kitten puppy season nonstop" - Asli (Ashley) Akkaya
      • "I've advocated for every other marginalized group -except for animals. Meanwhile, in my personal life, I was adopting and fostering shelter or street dogs/cats. So working with El Paso Animal Services is a dream come true - to be able to work for community animals' safety and health." - Veronica Frescas
      • "We found an abandoned dog at the barn where our horse was boarded.  We couldn't find a place we trusted enough with him to go on vacation, so we started our own dog day care and boarding business, and Ernie became a Therapy Dog visiting schools, libraries and nursing homes. The business he inspired, Wonder Dog Ranch is over 12 years old and Ernie the Wonder Dog was the mentor to Trixie Tripod, my current therapy dog who continues his good work to promote the values of the human/animal bond." - Brenda Trainor
      • "Taking in stray animal as an AmeriCorps member in a neighborhood that was a Habitat for Humanity project." - Vincent Medley
      • "Looking for something when I transitioned from my last career and also affected by seeing how much people really need their animals in trying to get through difficult times." - Karen Vandersall
      • "I was involved in a high-profile neglect case when I was practicing as an RVT in a large referral clinic.   It opened my eyes to how many people and orgs need to work together to provide justice for animals in these cases." - Heather Schrader
      • "I am a retired Zoological manager, specializing in Captive Bear mgmt., and upon retirement I saw how many neglected, homeless and dead pets roamed across my county and wanted to help make our community aware of our shelter. So I volunteered doing the PR and fundraising for the last 18 years. I still do wildlife rescue as there are so few people who know how to do that too." - Claudia Labbe
      • "I came from the human therapeutics/ outreach arena and substance abuse prevention world working as a community outreach director.  I have always loved animals and found myself grant writing using data focused not on needle exchanges, but rather unhoused services and veteran's issues with their pets.  The intersection of DV and animal cruelty is the space where my prevention background shines. Preventing cruelty with all of its faces is what drives me." - Lisa Pearce

Many of our clients are unhoused.  A lot of what we do is coordinate resources and work with other local agencies to help connect people with care. We provide free pet food and supplies and cover the cost of routine veterinary care for our clients so that they can focus on their own health instead of worrying about whether or not they will be able to feed the pets that they rely on.  Finding veterinarians who are willing to work with the unhoused or low income is so difficult. Most vet students only want to go into private practice. At Charleston Animal Society we are AAHA accredited. The first shelter and clinic in the Southeast to do so. Our team trains Univ GA and Univ Florida vet students in S/N and shelter medicine every day. Have to figure out how to retain vets for shelter health." - Lisa Pearce

    • "It is the reason for euthanasia that is so hurtful; compassionate passing for a pet whose quality-of-life warrants passing can be a blessing and can fill your heart with passion and relief from pain; but euthanasia because no one is around to care for a pet or from neglect-caused reasons is heart breaking." - Brenda Trainor

I cried several times throughout. Thank you so much for sharing and for being vulnerable with us all. You touched on so many issues going on nationwide, and shined light from a veterinarian perspective that goes unnoticed so much of the time! You're changing lives, and we can't thank you enough for your mission, and compassion for communities around you near and far.

Our Denver homeless population NEEDS you! We would love to link with anyone else that is in Colorado to get this going! Fostering Love Rescues is just a small animal sanctuary, but our team is happy to help where we can!

This is the first zoom meeting I was able to go back and watch! What a great one to have time for! I need this book on Audible so I can listen on the go. While our community is small and doesn't have unhoused like bigger areas, it gave me lots of ideas for further outreach in the at-risk communities. I always get so excited for all this great work going on around us! Thank you for all y'all do!

Dr. Kwane's Zoom really put into perspective what veterinary practitioners experience on a daily basis... that mix of happiness for a new patient and their new animal family member constantly sandwiched by the anguish of loss. The act of kindness toward the unhoused person whose dog had a skin condition really resonated with me... The fact that Dr. Kwane SAW the issue and then DID something about it stayed with me. What a powerful presentation on hope, compassion, resilience, and working together. I'll definitely be getting his book!

For those who have read it, were there any parts of the book that made you think, "I'd like to do this with my organization"?
